Friends and business acquaintances said a couple found dead Monday in their Perris-area home had been experiencing health and financial problems for the past year.
Detectives are investigating the shooting death of Stanley R. Jakubowicz and his wife, Beverly Lorraine Jakubowicz, both 67. A motive for the shooting in the 21800 block of Lake Mathews Drive has not been determined, said Riverside County sheriff's Investigator Jerry Franchville. It appeared that Stanley Jakubowicz shot his wife and then himself, Franchville said.
Stanley Jakubowicz, owner of a mortgage business in Riverside, was devoted to his wife, who worked in his office, said Christine Shaffer, an employee of the business that rented office space to him.
Shaffer said he told her just last week that his wife was five treatments away from completing chemotherapy during her second battle with breast cancer, and that she appeared to be recovering.
He would give Shaffer updates when he dropped off his rent. "He would say, 'Mom is doing good,' or 'Mom is having a hard time,' " Shaffer said.
Shaffer's boss, Todd Peterson, said Stanley Jakubowicz always paid his rent on time, but Shaffer knew the mortgage company was having financial trouble.
"With the softening economy ... that put a lot of stress on him," Peterson said.
Shaffer said the couple's death came as a shock.
"She seemed like the kind of person that would never give up ever, ever, ever," she said.
Franchville said the investigation should be complete in six to eight weeks when tests from the autopsies are complete.
